The word "legendary" gets trotted out in many situations where it doesn't really apply, but it can fairly be attached to the Wagner performances of Reginald Goodall. Although Goodall (1901-90) conducted the premiere of Britten's Peter Grimes, he is now more often remembered for his English-language Ring and Mastersingers at Sadler's Wells (now English National Opera) in London. The Ring was released commercially, but this Chandos issue marks the first official appearance of a live Mastersingers broadcast from February 1968. Goodall not only conducted but worked tirelessly, over an unusually long rehearsal period, to be sure that his singers were able to produce an inseparable combination of line-by-line clarity of thought and diction with classic beauty of vocal tone. In a Goodall performance, nobody ever screams. This is nowhere more evident than in the Walther of Alberto Remedios, who learned from Goodall how to draw an audience toward him with fervent yet quiet expression and noble tone. "Am stillen Herd" (here, "By silent hearth") is a fine example, but even more impressive is the tenor's contribution to the Act III quintet. Wagner marks this "piano and tender," but how often do we hear it that way?
