Named after famed viola player Lionel Tertis, the Tertis Viola Ensemble is an unusual group. Numerous chamber ensembles exist made up of varying numbers of the same instrument -- all cello, all guitar, etc. -- but an all-viola ensemble is uncommon, especially an enduring, long-standing one. The Tertis Viola Ensemble was founded in 2008 by members of the Munich Philharmonic viola section. A great deal of thought went into their formation, and the results are unmistakable on this Oehms Classic debut album. No note, no vibrato, no dynamic, no phrase is performed without careful thinking and consideration on how it would affect the group's overall sound. The program, which ranges from Telemann to Christopher Norton and includes original works, transcriptions, and arrangements, shows just how satisfying a group of four violas can truly be. The vast array of sound qualities, colors, and textures that they achieve is truly remarkable. Even more stunning is the impressive clarity and lucidity of their sound; there's never even a hint of the muddiness that might be associated with the instrument. Each of the four members is a consummate artist and master technician in their own right. Having played together in an orchestral setting assures virtually flawless intonation and a well-blended sound. Their musical interpretations of their intriguing and enjoyable program are intricate, lively, and entirely engaging.
