Fans of Adrian Boult will be pleased that the conductor's 1956 disc of Sibelius' tone poems is back in the catalog, but unfortunately, two of the original recordings are not present for reasons of space. Performed with the London Philharmonic, Boult's readings are well-shaped, taut, and direct with a minimum of atmosphere and a maximum of clarity. This Tapiola is more of a symphonic allegro than an invocation of Finland's mysterious northwoods, and the Prelude to The Tempest is more a study in texture and tempo than the evocation of a storm at sea. This is not to say that Boult's accounts are not effective. One feels the excitement of Finlandia and the sense of motion implicit in The Oceanides, but these are strictly musical thrills; one does not sense heroism in Pohjola's Daughter or feel exaltation at the close of Night Ride & Sunrise, merely the satisfaction of a musical structure ably and accurately portrayed. Sibelius was a good enough composer that his music can as readily survive being distanced from its programmatic content as can Beethoven's or Brahms'. Many listeners will not miss it at all, and those who do can turn to Thomas Beecham's more poetic accounts. Remastered from monaural originals, the sound here is clear and clean, though a tad lacking in color and presence.
