Luiza Borac certainly has the technique to play Schubert's incredibly difficult "Wanderer" Fantasy and six of Liszt's phenomenally difficult Annes de pelerinage. In the Schubert, she can capably handle the scales Presto Scherzo and the monumental fugal Allegro finale. In the Liszt, she can float the right-hand runs in Sonetto 123 del Petraca, thunder the left-hand chords in Apr s une Lecture de Dante and dance through the double-octaves of the Tarentella. And Borac surely has the passionate sensuality to make the arabesques of the closing Les jeux d'eau a la Villa d'Este shimmer and cascade. But Borac does not quite have the tonal depth to express the melancholy of the fantasy's Adagio or the legato line to sing the bel canto melodies of Venezia e Napoli. Nor does Borac always have the restraint to hold herself back at climaxes but instead rushes impetuously into them, sometimes dropping notes or over-pedaling or slamming ten-fingered chords. This is all undeniably exciting, but it is also somewhat unnerving, like joyriding with a driver who speeds up for tight curves on sheer cliffs. Avie's sound is dry and hard.
