This six-CD set, to which the word marathon could apply, is but part of an enormous series of seven boxes covering Scarlatti's 555 keyboard sonatas in their entirety. Several of these mammoth cycles are underway or completed, and even if editing is really the soul of concertizing, the versions are distinct enough to maintain interest. Lester's playing is powerfully rhythmic, intense, sometimes almost abrupt. He emphasizes the Iberian rhythms to be found in various Scarlatti sonatas, and he conveys a sense of what Scarlatti must have been like as a keyboard virtuoso. In some volumes, Lester makes the questionable decision to employ an organ, but this box is all harpsichord, with a replica of a 1785 Portuguese harpsichord providing an idealized and more powerful version of the instruments Scarlatti would have known. Lester's ordering is mostly that of the books in which Scarlatti's sonatas were originally published. The so-called Venice XIV and Venice XV books named on the cover are probably collections of earlier works, but they contain plenty of examples of the fiery and often bizarre style that defined Scarlatti at the height of his fame. Sample a pair of sonatas in C minor, the muscular K. 56 (CD 2, track 1) and the uncharacteristically long and gloomy K. 126 (CD 6, track 2) for a taste of Lester's highly expressive approach. One of the earlier sets may be better for the listener just starting out with this cycle, but those rightly enamored of Lester's playing can proceed with confidence to this disc, and, no doubt, to the grand finale.
