American pianist John Browning recorded this single-disc group of Domenico Scarlatti keyboard sonatas in 1994, near the end of his long career; it is reissued here, as part of a loose series covering strong but unavailable 1990s keyboard recordings, by Britain's Nimbus label. There is a long tradition of performing Scarlatti on a modern piano, and the variety of interpretations of his themselves endlessly varied sonatas is impressive. The effortlessly virtuoso readings of Russia's Mikhail Pletnev are worth considering, but these rather extreme interpretations by Browning are both unusual and flawlessly executed. Browning appears to have made a nod toward Baroque performance practice on one hand and disregarded it on the other. His articulation model is based on harpsichord texture, with sharp but even attacks in the right hand that are especially noticeable in appoggiaturas, acciaturas. The most noticeable aspect of Browning's performance, in fact, may be his emphasis on the dissonances that are everywhere in Scarlatti's music, and he brings them out better than do most of the other piano performers. In other areas Browning drops any connection to the Baroque. Where Scarlatti carefully controls the dynamics by adjusting the number of notes in a chord, Browning charges in and adds jolting accents, tempo variations, and all the other devices with which pianists used to make Scarlatti sound like Chopin while losing the subtle references to Spanish guitar music, Italian song, and other popular traditions that were woven into his music. If you're a Scarlatti-piano devotee it won't matter; if you have the sound of harpsichord performances by Richard Lester or Colin Tilney in your head it may. Sample and decide; the album's sound, from the American Institute and Academy of Arts and Letters in New York, was good to begin with and hasn't suffered in the reissue.
