Alceo Galliera was largely active as a guest conductor throughout the 1940s-1960s, with his strongest professional ties being with Walter Legge and the Philharmonia Orchestra. Although quite prolific in recording albums, few examples of his conducting have remained notable into the present day. His most enduring collaboration exists in the form of his collaboration with Maria Callas singing The Barber of Seville on the EMI label. This is in no way intended to diminish Galliera's talents as either a musician or an orchestral technician. The present album of Respighi works speaks volumes about Galliera's close attention to detail and nuance in his orchestral performances. Respighi stands as one of the greatest orchestrators of all time, and whether performing his own works or arrangements he made of other composer's pieces (as in the present selection from Rossini's La Boutique Fantasque) every subtle detail is of immense importance. Galliera clearly recognized this fact and delivers crystal-clear, well-disciplined performances. The sound quality of the Philharmonia Orchestra is rich and well-balanced, even in the monaural recording of Brazilian Impressions. This album is a suitable choice for collectors of historical conducting figures, as well as casual listeners seeking an enjoyable Respighi set.
