Though both were written during the Second World War, the two violin sonatas of Prokofiev could not be more distant, appearing stylistically to be separated by decades rather than a few short years. The first sonata has clear inspiration drawn from the war itself, with moments of intense aggression and starkness. By contrast, the second sonata is much lighter, tending more toward classical sentiments, though every bit as serious as the first sonata. This Avi recording features the young (25 years of age at the time of recording) Erik Schumann and pianist Henri Sigfridsson. The album's liner notes indicate that Schumann had not yet completed his studies at the Cologne Music School where the recording was made, a fact that is noticeable upon listening. While his technique is clearly quite strong, it is still a work in progress. The Prokofiev sonatas are a tall order for anyone, especially for a premiere recording. Difficulties with intonation and clear articulation in the highest registers of the instrument suggest that Schumann may have bitten off a little more than he could chew. Some additional musical maturation is needed, as well; the First Sonata, which abounds with emotion and intensity, is actually rather bland and safe. The cleaner lines of the Second Sonata play more to Schumann's current musical strengths, but still listeners are not offered a profoundly moving experience. Schumann's career certainly holds much promise and his development is worth watching; this album, however, is not as dazzling as it could and should be.
