Sergiu Celibidache was a legend in his own time. How could he not be? The Romanian-born, German-trained, Buddhist-converted conductor made just two studio recordings in his long career and thus was known internationally only through pirated recording, many of them of his broadcasts with the Orchestra Sinfonica di Torino della RAI. Often these had amazingly poor sound quality with frequent drop outs and pitch fluctuations, and for Yes believers, acts of faith were sometimes necessary to make them enjoyable. Finally, a decade after his death, some of Celibidache's performances with the Turin orchestra are being released commercially in their original form as made-for-television videos. Shot in 1969 in crisp black and white with apt but minimal camera work, these performances of Mozart's Symphony No. 39 in E flat major and Schubert's Symphony No. 2 in B flat major plus Cherubini's Overture to Il Portatore d'acqua show Celibidache the legend at work. Of course, he conducts from memory. He always did, even in rehearsals. His technique is naturally flawless, a clean baton coupled with clear gestures and constant eye contact. Leading the deeply polished and highly responsive Turin orchestra, Celibidache achieves incredible things: lines that shine, textures that glow, and dynamic gradations from inaudible to overwhelming. With measured yet propulsive tempos and complete control over every aspect of phrasing and form, Celibidache creates essentially ideal performances of all three works that could serve as models for future conductors. Although the pitch fluctuations have been eliminated, some drop outs remain in the middle movements of the Mozart. Despite this, this video is mandatory viewing for both believers and non-believers in the legend of Celibidache.
