Luckily for classical record companies, Max Reger wrote a clarinet quintet, thereby giving A&R directors something to couple with Mozart's clarinet quintet other than Brahms' work in the same genre. Unluckily, Reger's quintet, though arguably more approachable than most of the Bavarian late Romantic composer's works, is still typical of his output: garrulous, contrapuntally dense, and emotionally unspecific. Even in this superbly played and wholly sympathetic performance by clarinetist Wolfgang Meyer with the Carmina Quartet, Reger's quintet goes on and on without getting anywhere. Lines wind, harmonies twist, and forms unfold, but as with most of Reger's works, the result is a half-hour of late-Romantic note-spinning. The same cannot be said of Mozart's clarinet quintet. Brimming with melodic and harmonic charm, it is as clear in its expressivity as an azure sky. Meyer and the Carmina players turn in a performance as superbly played and wholly sympathetic as their Reger, but far more persuasive. Meyer's agile technique and warm tone coupled with the Carmina's elegant ensemble and gracious support are well suited for the work, and while their Mozart may not replace anyone's favorite recordings, it will certainly provide pleasure for as long as it's playing. SWR's digital sound is very clear and detailed, but a bit lacking in atmosphere.
