Claudio Monteverdi's Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda, to a text by Torquato Tasso, was composed in 1624 but published only in 1638 as part of the composer's eighth book of madrigals. It's less a madrigal than a little 20-minute dramatic presentation, written for a Carnival celebration or perhaps a wedding (although indeed in the later madrigals of Monteverdi the line between solo song and drama can be thin). With its tale, mostly in a narrator's voice rather than those of the characters, of a Crusader knight defeating a Saracen princess in battle and baptizing her before her death, the text offers a field day for both feminists and students of imperialism. In the musical realm the work introduced a new expressive vocabulary, with indicated pizzicato and tremolo among a huge battery of programmatic effects that bring the epic battle to life. It's a tremendously exciting piece, and while there are other versions (that by France's Ensemble Akad mia is noteworthy) that outdo this one for sheer virtuosity and intensity, the 13-member Ensemble "Concerto" (quotes in original), with soprano Cettina Cadelo and tenors Carlo Gaifa and Vincenzo Manno, is equal to its considerable vocal and instrumental demands and keeps things moving. The booklet is the unusual feature here. Italian label Tactus is historically oriented, usually offering unknown repertory. Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda is "hit" territory for them, but the booklet by Paolo Fabbri goes into extensive detail about the literary and social background in which Il Combattimento and the six smaller madrigals that introduce the program arose. The notes are in Italian and English, but the texts of the music are given only in Italian, which gives you an idea of the specialist audience to which this disc is addressed. To that audience, and indeed to anyone whose deeper curiosity about Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda has been piqued, this release can be recommended.
