Originally formed as a student group in 1999 during time at the Paris Conservatoire, Trio C r s has chosen for its CD debut album with Oehms Classics a French-centered program incorporating both standard repertoire and new works for piano trio. The disc opens with the underperformed Faur D minor Piano Trio and the celebrated Ravel A minor Trio. Both of these are solid works and good choices to show off both technical and interpretive skills of an up-and-coming ensemble. The program concludes with a trio by Philippe Hersant, a set of variations inspired by the carillon song of the Church of Saint Genevi ve. By far the most technically demanding work on the program, Hersant's composition is brilliant for its use of texture, tonality, and color; it's a welcome new addition to the repertoire. Despite a relatively long span playing together, the Trio C r s appears to have noticeable problems playing well together. An interview in the liner notes quotes the ensemble as saying it is "in the process of maturing." This certainly cannot be argued. The two string players continuously struggle to find a center of pitch; the sounds of their two instruments do not blend well together at all, and do not create a unified, organic tone when joined by the piano. While the group may have something to offer interpretively, these fundamental issues of playing together as a chamber ensemble must be ironed out before this or future recordings will find widespread appeal.
