In 2006 King records brought out Earl Bostic's 14 Greatest Hits, an exact reissue of this label's 1990 release All His Hits. The recordings within, made anywhere from July 1946 to July 1964, epitomize Bostic's lively and robust approach to popular music in general and to the alto saxophone in particular. 'That's the Groovy Thing' is typical of Bostic's rowdy singalong rhythm & blues formula. The rest of the tunes are magnificent examples of the man's commanding mastery of his instrument and his arresting ability to transform any melody into a musical analogue of passionate lovemaking. A sampler like this can stand on its own but will also inspire some listeners to track down all of Bostic's recorded works, especially as presented by the Classics Chronological Series.
