This CD offers 8 contemporary pieces for cello, solo or with other instruments, performed by Craig Hultgren. Charles Norman Mason's "The Artist and His Model" (1992) for cello and tape "plays with images perceived and interpreted between live and recorded (electronic and cello) sounds. The mirroring ... becomes so intense that the two become blurred." The range of the sounds is from rushing sequences of tones, long sustained drones, bouncing bow and tremolo techniques. Matthew Burrier's "II" (1991) for solo cello begins with peaceful melodies containing glissando sighs, and then alternates with more aggressive passages. "The Double Bow Improvisation" (1992) for live amplified cello by Craig Hultgren begins with crunching sounds produced by heavy pressure and continues on to explore these dry, airy timbres. Hultgren's very curious "The Chained Cello Improvisation" (1992) for live amplified cello obsesses on a cyclic bowing of raw texture alternated with a fast on-rush of bowed tones with slides and bent notes that at times create a pathetic sighing. Matthew Marth's "They're Still Running to the West, Rex" (1992) for cello, speaking cellist and electronic tape "is an expression of fear and disgust ... Rex ... wishes people would think for themselves". The complex poem delivered in a declarative tone includes many American cultural images separated by a shouted "whoo-ee!". Lewis Nielson's "Valentine Mechanique (Eating Carmen)" (1993) for amplified cello and percussion contains small quotes from Bizet's opera, but is mainly a dialogue between the cello and percussion that "achieves some resolution ... in the realm of pure sound". Robert Paredes' "Small Writing (to the memory of Kenneth Gaburo)" (1993-94) for cello, speaking cellist, and percussion is an homage to Gaburo's work correlating language and music. John C. Ross's "Encore" (1992) for cello and piano is a richly neo-Romantic work.
