Samuel Coleridge-Taylor had good luck and bad luck in his career as a composer. He had the good luck to have his choir teacher pay his tuition to the Royal College of Music where he learned his craft under Charles Stanford. But he also had the bad luck to have his early cantata Hiawatha's Wedding Feast become such an enormously popular hit that the resulting overload of commissions and thus of work drove him to his grave at 37. Coleridge-Taylor's music, too, had its ups and downs. Take as an example his three-movement Violin Concerto from 1912. Commissioned for performance in America, Coleridge-Taylor used several American popular songs as the basis for some of his thematic material, including "Yankee Doodle" in the finale. Fortunately, he recognized the results as hopelessly banal and drastically rewrote the concerto. Unfortunately, the revised score went down with the Titanic and a second copy had to be rushed over the Atlantic in time for the scheduled premiere. This enchanting performance of the revised Violin Concerto performed by soloist Lorraine McAslan with Nicholas Braithwaite leading the London Philharmonic Orchestra proves Coleridge-Taylor's ultimate preponderance of good luck in having such persuasive advocates for his music. Clearly not a work in the grand manner of Brahms' concerto but rather in the lyrical manner of Dvor k's concerto, Coleridge-Taylor's work needs tender loving care to come across these days, and it gets the deluxe treatment here. McAslan has a lush but not luscious tone, a strong but not overbearing technique, and a wonderful way of spinning out a long line that makes the most of the music's best qualities, and Braithwaite again shows himself to be one of the most convivial of accompanists in England. Coupled with Coleridge-Taylor's early and very romantic Legend and Romance for violin and orchestra as well as composer Julius Harrison's much later but still very romantic Bredon Hill for violin and orchestra, this disc will have strong appeal for fans of English fin de si cle music. Recorded in 1994, Lyrita's digital sound, like Lyrita's earlier stereo sound, is clear, cool, and deep.
