When it comes to symphonic writing, the passing of the torch from Beethoven to Brahms is well-known, as is Brahms' familiar trepidation and self-doubt. The symphony, however, was not the only genre in which Brahms was Beethoven's natural successor. Brahms three violin sonatas also follow some of the advances and stylistic trends that Beethoven laid out, most notably in ensuring an equal voice for both the violin and piano. Brahms brought his own harmonic richness and rhythmic intrigue, resulting in three cornerstones of the violin sonata repertoire. Performing these masterworks on this Challenge Records disc are violinist Linus Roth and pianist Jos Gallardo, two relative newcomers to the classical scene. Both are already making tremendous inroads in their individual careers, and together they form a duo capable of producing mature, insightfully musical performances far beyond their young years.
