The chief complaint about PentaTone's "RQR" line remains that there is absolutely no mention of any of the performers in the liner notes, despite presenting highly acclaimed soloists like pianist Misha Dichter, world-renowned conductors like Kurt Masur, and world-class orchestras like the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig. The performers deserve as equal discussion as the recording technology, if not more so. Having taken this into account, this SACD delivers what PentaTone promises -- a very satisfying remastering of the original four-channel Philips recordings. Brahms' second piano concerto so often becomes mired in slow tempi and overindulgency on the part of conductor and soloist alike. Not so in this recording; the first and second movements always contain a pleasant sense of moving forward without losing any of the spaciousness or passion. The third movement begins with an enjoyable rendition of the famous cello solo and continues on without ever feeling bogged down or dragging. Dichter's performance is very sensitive and his voicing in the thickest parts of the Brahms are still pleasantly transparent. The strengths heard in the Brahms are paralleled in the Beethoven -- transparency of voicing while maintaining a rich, full sound, and a very unpretentious interpretation.
