Originally recorded for the Talent label in 2004, Philippe Herreweghe's recordings of Beethoven's symphonies were reissued several years later by audiophile label Pentatone. The original recordings were also aimed at audiophiles, and the project is a bit out of character for Pentatone, which has specialized in the remastering of acoustically and artistically strong LPs from several decades ago. The sonic clarity of the recording, the product of sessions in an Antwerp movie palace, is impressive in any case. So are the performances themselves. Herreweghe is mostly known for historical-instrument performances, and his transparent textures here bear the mark of the authentic-performance movement. But there's nothing historically oriented about the Royal Flemish Philharmonic, and really what Herreweghe contributes in the Symphony No. 4 in B flat major, Op. 60, and Symphony No. 7 in A major, Op. 92, is a set of fresh ears. He hears rhythmic linkages between the opening and slow movements of the Symphony No. 7; he uses momentum to connect the slow introductions closely to the main bodies of the opening movements of both symphonies; he shapes phrases in such a way as to create an impression of lightness that suits these particular symphonies very well. If you see the name Herreweghe and are expecting highly revisionist readings, you won't get them; these are crisp, fresh performances that can stand up to the other fine modern choices out there, and the engineering is nonpareil.
