So far, Kurt Masur has recorded Beethoven's Fifth three times: first with the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig in 1972, again with the Gewandhaus in 1987, and then with the New York Philharmonic in 1992. None of the performances are particularly good: the 1972 Gewandhaus is stolid, the 1987 Gewandhaus is stodgy, and the 1992 is simply dull. With competition from just about every conductor who ever picked up the baton, Masur's Fifth is outclassed by everyone from Arthur Nikisch to Carlos Kleiber. Similarly, while Masur has recorded Beethoven's Second twice, once with the Gewandhaus in 1974 and then again with the Gewandhaus in 1989, neither performance is especially interesting, and, once again, his Second is outclassed by everyone from Karl B hm to Claudio Abbado. So why should anyone listen to this disc? Because of the sound: while these performances were recorded in quadraphonic sound and only heretofore released in stereo or remastered digital, this PentaTone release is the first to contain the recording in its original form. And while the sound of Philips' LPs and CDs have always been clear, deep, and true, this PentaTone super audio CD is even clearer, deeper, and truer, if such a thing is possible.
