This disc joins together live recordings from three different Wilhelm Backhaus concerts: Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 in E flat major recorded in Cologne in 1956, the same composer's Piano Sonata No. 21 in C major recorded in Bonn in 1959, and seven etudes by Chopin (six from Opus 25 and one from Opus 10) recorded in Lugano in 1953. Hailed in some quarters as the true heir to the great tradition of German piano playing, Backhaus was a virtuoso whose technical ability never called attention to itself; even in showoff works like those on this disc, Backhaus was dedicated not to self-aggrandizement but to merely being the conduit through which the music flowed. This doesn't mean his playing isn't impressive. Although flecked with wrong notes, Backhaus' playing is consistently strong, light, and direct. But it does mean that listeners, even careful listeners, will value these performances less for what they say about Backhaus and more for what they say about the music. With the then-young Georg Solti leading K lner Rundfunk-Sinfonie-Orchester in the concerto, this disc will be mandatory listening for anyone who ever admired Backhaus' playing, even in this raw and rough radio broadcast sound.
