The 24 Preludes and Fugues, Op. 87, by Dmitry Shostakovich clearly refer to the two sets of preludes and fugues of Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier, but the nature of the relationship is a bit tricky and may well go to the heart of why Shostakovich's reputation continues to rise. German pianist Bernd Glemser is one of just a few pianists to have realized that playing any or all of the sets straight through is not the best way to elucidate that relationship, and he gives explicit credit in the interview-format booklet to a series broadcast on the Southwest German Radio network in the 1980s that experimented with various interlocking groupings. Shostakovich's pieces are not neo-Baroque. Nor are they much like his other music, although they show motivic connections with both Bach and with other Shostakovich pieces. Those motivic connections are among the musical signatures -- themes, motives, spelled-out initials -- that circulate all through Shostakovich's work like messages left by spies. Glemser doesn't put it in these terms explicitly, but he seems to accept the view that the fundamental basis of Shostakovich's music is the experience of a composer living in a totalitarian society. In these preludes and fugues he was faced in an unusually bald way with the task of keeping a tradition alive. The connections he draws with Bach, and that Glemser unearths, are those of mood, reference, and motive. Glemser pairs pieces by key, creating distant rather than explicit echoes of Bach and leading up to an unusual climax: the highly dissonant Fugue in D flat major, Op. 87/15, which he rightly notes must have been taken as a poke in the authorities' eye by its hearers. He jumps into this piece with only the slightest pause, and it has the desired effect of shock, after which the listener returns to the calm baseline with another Bach pair. With concise material both on the disc and in the notes, Glemser has asked a lot of fascinating questions. The Oehms label contributes superb studio sound to the process.
