For her third international recording, Bulgarian-French pianist Lilia Boyadjieva has delivered a stunning recital of piano music by Dmitry Shostakovich. She opens her disc with a playful account of his early Three Fantastic Dances, followed by a powerful reading of his Second Piano Sonata, and concluding with a characterful interpretation of his 24 Preludes. In every case, Boyadjieva has the measure of the music. She doesn't overload the Fantastic Dances, doesn't shortchange the sonata, and doesn't either under or over interpret the Preludes. In every case, Boyadjieva's steel-fingered technique and clear-eyed insights portray Shostakovich's relatively under-programmed piano music in a very favorable light. Listeners might wish for more irony in the dances, more muscle in the sonata, and more wit and feeling in the preludes, but no one could wish them more accurately played. Some listeners may already have favorite recordings of these works -- one thinks of Emil Gilels' magnificent sonata, and no Shostakovich admirer would want to be without the composer's own stylish reading of the Fantastic Dances. But listeners new to this repertoire could do far worse than to start with Boyadjieva's disc, particularly in Artek's crystalline recording.
