Zach Miskin, the gifted French/American cellist born and raised in New York City, makes his album debut for Na?ve. 'For Your Safety' is a surprising concept album he conceived to give a different voice to his instrument, collaborating with several big names on the music scene, including members of The National and The Books.

Miskin: "The inspiration for this album was driven by a simple idea: push the limits of the cello. I wanted to take the instrument out of its classical 'box' and travel with it through beautifully crafted loops and overdubs, solo passages in songs and in samples, while of course exploring the exotic territory of improvisation."

The album really defies categorisation. Miskin's mission to incorporate the classical conventions of the cello through non-traditional musical contexts such as experimental, jazz, pop, electro-acoustic folk, among others, has been the catalyst for various collaborations and is evident here.

Most of the musicians/composers have similarly eclectic backgrounds. Bryce Dessner is best-known as guitarist for the acclaimed indie rock band, The National, but he's also performed with Bang on a Can All-Stars and his music is regularly played by the Kronos Quartet. Paul De Jong and Nick Zammuto are in The Books, while Australian Padma Newsome is a founding member of Alt-Classical Quartet, Clogs and tours with The National. Todd Reynolds is a long-serving player in the Steve Reich Ensemble, performed in Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Ensemble, and his music has been called "post-ambient, post-minimal, quantum-organic electronica".
