The three French women who call themselves Les Fin'Amoureuses are refreshingly candid about the goals of this experiment in East-West fusion, which takes its place among a number of discs that have drawn on the multicultural music of medieval Spain and, more daringly, on Ottoman Turkish experiments with Western music. "Our artistic considerations were not historic," writes viol player Nathalie Waller. "Nor did they have anything to do with cultural identity." They sing music from the Huguenot Psalter, both in its original form and as Turkified by Polish-Turkish transplant Wojciech Bobowski (1610-1675), an Ottoman court musician. The group has, Waller wrote, "readapted this music without any cultural identification, simply through what we are." And paradoxically enough, through essentially doing what they like, the group achieves some important insights. The psalms are mixed in with old French folk songs from various regions and with Jewish Ladino-language songs from Spain. Various groups have performed each of these repertories, but no one has put them all together into a single lyrical passage, with one gentle-voiced soloist (Emmanuelle Drouet) accompanied by a pair of stringed-instrument players who also sing harmony in simple arrangements, perhaps partly improvised. The fruit of this subjective approach is that the listener is reminded of how poetic and even downright passionate the Psalms can be. The texts of the songs on this album deal with various topics, but the predominant mood is one of feminine romantic intoxication, nicely summed up by a Ladino song "Yo era ninya" (track 17) that apparently originated in Turkey's Smyrna region: "I was a girl/from an eminent family/I knew no suffering/until I met you/and now I am your servant." The music on this disc, all of it falling in between the common categories of popular and classical, is modest in scope, but in its way it gently illuminates both the ties between sacred and secular realms in the West and the deeper unities that underlie the split between Western and Islamic Middle Eastern cultures.
