Joe Morris emerged in the '90s as one of the most important modern jazz/improvising guitarists to grace the scene. And while the artist generally utilizes his electric Les Paul guitar, here he opts for the solo route, armed with his steel stringed acoustic. On this outing, Morris renders slick picking thematic inventions based upon his interpretations of the elements and nature via works titled "Liquid," "Gravity," and "Atmosphere," whereas he produces startling imagery on "Shape," thanks to his pursuance of circular patterns, intricate fretwork, and the power of suggestion. However, the guitarist's beaming individuality comes to prominence on this expertly and altogether fascinating exhibition consisting of jarring single note lines, fragmented micro-themes, abstract blues-based motifs, and rapid fire chord progressions. Basically, Morris' complex yet mindbending artistic statements sustain interest throughout, hence, a true stylist who transcends the often folksy implications of acoustic guitar performances to novel heights with this superb 2001 release. Highly recommended!
