Enclosure 2 is a four-CD set from Innova, the label of the Minnesota Composers' Forum. The set gathers some of the rarest recordings of compositions by Harry Partch, plus a few introductory remarks and a 46-minute group of reminiscences from Partch's wake, made by his closest friends and co-workers, interspersed with some further remarks on a tape made of Partch. There are several larger works on this album: ten of the Li Po Lyrics, Barstow, U.S. Highball, Dark Brother, Quarter-Saw Section, and Ring Around the Moon. Every one of these entries is a different recording -- often of a different revision -- from the same work's release on Partch's Gate Five label. Most of the short pieces in the set (By the Rivers of Babylon, San Francisco, While my Heart Keeps Beating Time, San Francisco II, Two Settings from Joyce's Finnegan's Wake, Y.D. Fantasy, O Frabjous Day!, And Bless This House) are presented in the acetate recordings made by Warren Gilson in Madison, Wisconsin, in 1945. They are noisy, and their recording quality varies from piece to piece, but they are in general exciting performances. San Francisco II is an intriguing selection; it is a high-quality 1990 broadcast recording of the original work San Francisco, arranged for standard instruments rather than the unique Partch instruments, but still played in Partch's just-intonation forty-three-tone-to-the-octave system. While My Heart Keeps Beating Time, Partch's one and only published pop song, is also a more modern recording and affords a fascinating contrast to his serious work. There is an awful lot of material here of interest only to specialists, which rules out the acquisition of the four-CD set for anyone else to whom cost is an object.
