Back in the distant days of stereo, Chandos, the English label now well-known for its brash digital sound, made recordings that appeared first not on CD but on LP. Two of them are coupled here on this 2007 CD of Elgar's music for children: Bryden Thomson and the Ulster Orchestra's 1982 recordings of both Wand of Youth Suites plus the Nursery Suite and Norman del Mar and the Bournemouth Sinfonietta's 1976 recording of Dream Children. Unlike later recordings, Chandos' sound here is smooth, cool, and colorful with a fine sense of time and place and no trace of the brash digital sound that would become the label's trademark. Beyond the sound, both sets of conductors and orchestras turn in lovely and idiomatic performances: Thomson and the Ulster's suites are funny in the fast movements and sweet in the slow movements, while del Mar and the Bournemouth's Dream Children are tender and melancholy. If they don't surpass the classic recordings by Elgar himself in nostalgia, they do match more recent recordings by Vernon Handley and Charles Mackerras in delight. For Elgar fans who can't get enough of his music for children, this disc will do splendidly.
