Denon Classics' release on its Radiance label, Down Time: Classical Music for Quiet Moments, pretty much delivers what it promises: a selection of relaxing music that's calm and not jarring, pleasant for background listening, yet interesting enough to engage the listener who wants to give it undivided attention. Many of the selections will be familiar to listeners with even a glancing knowledge of some of the best-known pieces in the classical repertoire. The collection includes orchestral and piano music, with one piece of chamber music, by composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky, Brahms, Saint-Sa ns, Rachmaninov, Prokofiev, and Vaughan Williams. The pieces are consistently well performed, and the sound quality is pleasant, with a good, even level between tracks, even though they include varying performing forces. Radiance doesn't include the names of the performers, or the CDs from which the selections were taken, so the listener eager to hear more of a particular piece or composer will need to do some research on his/her own. Some pieces are clearly identified by title and movement, but others are ambiguous; the CD doesn't tell you which of Mendelssohn's many Songs Without Words is performed here, nor which selection from Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet ballet is included. For the listener who isn't concerned with those details, the CD works well as a collection of restful, attractive, low-key pieces.
