The idea that one could collect the best of flamenco, a centuries-old musical style, on one CD is a little silly. The album does not even feature Camaron de la Isla, among others one might name. So let's lower the bar a little and just judge it as an anthology drawn from various ARC discs. It features 11 artists on 15 tracks, with Rafa El Tachuela showing up four times. They run the gamut from those that are fairly simple and traditional to those which use an electric bass or synthesizers. Some of the tracks approach smooth jazz in their sound, and if you're put off by 'inauthentic' flamenco like this, you'd best keep your distance. Taken on its own terms, some of this stuff is fun. 'La Vida Es un Coriente' by Macarena sounds a bit like 'Hotel California' by the Eagles. 'Jose Guarin, the Old Gypsy' by El Mondao is more traditional, featuring a singer, a backup singer, a guitar, a backup guitar, and palmas (clapping). One interesting departure from the traditional is found in Curandero's 'Adios,' which features tablas, the East Indian-paired drums. This disc is best-viewed as a roundup of contemporary flamenco and whether you'll like it or not depends on what you think of the state of contemporary flamenco.
