Anton Kuerti is a highly sensitive musician with a keyboard technique that is really more of a touch rather than an attack, letting the notes become more rounded and rich in sound. The key to these late Beethoven sonatas is great contrast between loud and soft, crispness and lyricism. Kuerti's technique combined with what is probably more the engineering of the recording than the sound of the instrument makes these sonatas have a flattened, less bright sound than you would expect. Sonata No. 28 in particular is more subdued than the Hammerklavier. Kuerti follows Beethoven's tempo markings quite precisely, so the opening of No. 28 really is "somewhat lively and with the most intimate feeling," and the final movement is not too quick and is full of quiet determination. Throughout, his phrasing is full of feeling and imagination, and the sonata is more thoughtful and careful than the Hammerklavier. Here, Kuerti gives a compelling opening, making great contrast between the heroic chords and the beautifully lyrical phrases, as he does in the Scherzo as well. The Adagio and final fugue are again thoughtful, with careful attention paid to resoluteness of the fugue. The Hammerklavier draws you in more actively than the Sonata No. 28. These two sonatas, scale of the movements aside, are very similar in construction. Kuerti's performances of the two are enjoyable because of his attention to these formal similarities and to the differences in their overall humor. All this disc needs is a slightly more vivid sound.
